No New Stargate
Jun. 6th, 2026 03:08 pmI've been sitting with this for a few days. Here are my thoughts.
I've always said I'd rather have no new Stargate as opposed to bad Stargate. If what we get now is, as has been suggested, AI slop, then that would be a hard no from me.
This whole thing reminds me of how the Buffy reboot got axed. One guy in a suit who relished telling SMG that he had never seen any of the original series. Have any of these Amazon guys seen the original?
Michael Shanks has been so vocal and I have a frisson of an idea why: he was in it. Maybe a regular, maybe recurring, maybe just there to launch the show. None of the other cast, afaik, have said squat but Shanks is all over it.
That's just how I feel about it, what do you think?

Date: 2026-06-07 12:03 am (UTC)I would have thought a more modern Stargate would surely have to be more international given the way the politics was headed in the show, that and the current US political climate... what a scary thought *g*. I did get a chuckle out of Rhys Darby saying he would lend his services to the franchise! (I did say to a friend my first thought was him arguing with a Furling 'You've never seen Footloose, how do you know you won't like it?!')
Your Buffy story feels real similar to how OFMD got the axe as the conservative PTB at HBO Max axed all LGBTQI+2 and women lead shows to funnel money into the new HP reboot... (Heated Rivalry had already filmed)

Date: 2026-06-07 01:52 am (UTC)In all seriousness, tho, I was cautiously optimistic about the new show, and really enjoying all the buzz and fun folks were having speculating on what we were going to get. But once Star Trek Academy got axed after 1 season (yes, we'll get 2 because it was already in the can), I got The Dread about Stargate. I was hopeful since they were already in the writers' room and maybe could outrun the axe but. Siiiiiiigh.
The rumours that it got axed because Amazon decided we wouldn't like it--or the right percentage of dudebros wouldn't like it, or too many dudebros would have their childhoods ruined by teh gays or whatever rationale suits the bean-counting ... *deep breath* The idea that they decided before it even got to be a thing we might have an opinion about. That irks haaaard.
I'm glad Michael Shanks is making noise. According to Joseph Malozzi, the rest are limited by an NDA.
Capitalism sucks.
