We lost two space travelers this week: Carmen Argenziano who played Sam's dad Jacob and everyone's favorite Tok'ra Selmak.

Also cavorting among the stars is Opportunity, the rover whose 90-day mission to Mars lasted 15 years. I admit I got a little misty-eyed when I heard the NASA folks talk about him like he was an old friend. I suppose that was how they all thought of him. I think he/she/it/whatever demonstrated that tenacity and hard-headed determination might be a trait that doesn't just belong to living creatures.

Although Carmen will always be remembered for his Stargate role, he did a three-episode arc on House that I adored. I just wish they had kept him on because I imagine that he would have been a perfect foil for House. He wouldn't have been a hero-worshipping resident but someone who could have challenged House and who wouldn't have been bullied about. They missed a golden opportunity there.

So i'm gonna share a couple of Jacob/Selmak related fics I did.

A bit of a light-hearted missing scene from Summit/Last Stand.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/17783069

My contribution to the Jacob Alphabetsoup

https://archiveofourown.org/works/15427872

Fair skies.
I don't suppose this was any great surprise to the fans: next season (15) will be the last for the series. A ten-episode season which is already being filmed, to be shown sometime in the 2019-2020 season. I'm just glad they let them know so they could write us a decent ending. TPTB have already said they have no plans to kill off anyone and there is a possibility of a few guest appearances by dearly beloved former cast members. (Who doesn't want one more taste of Chocolate Thunder?)

So here's how I want it to go down.

-JJ finds herself expecting a third child and decides to ride a desk so she can spend more time with her kids. She's still fighting the good fight, only she's getting to go home every night.

-Rossi, wedding his fourth wife for the second time, realizes his time on the road led to multiple divorces. He takes a teaching job at Quantico and writes another book with:

-Dr. Spencer Reid. Can you imagine what a book Reid and Rossi could write? They've been up against some real diabolical killers- remember the deliciously creepy Jason Alexander in Masterpiece? Spencer leaves the BAU, temporarily, to spend some time with his mother before dementia completely robs her of her memories...sob.....

-Garcia moves to the new cyber crime division. If anyone can catch the on-line creeps, it's our girl Penelope.

- Tara and the two other guys go on to another team.

The return of...?

-Hotch. I don't know, Gibson did not leave under the best of circumstances so whether they offer him a cameo is iffy at best.

-Gideon. since we last saw him lying on a slab in the morgue this is definitely a long shot.

-Elle Greenaway. I for one would love to know what happened to her. She just kind of disappeared.

-the blonde who replaced JJ. Don't even remember her name so I don't really care.

-Jeanne Tripplehorn, Jennifer Love Hewitt. A mention would be nice, especially Alex, given how close she and Reid were.

Messer made a remark about doing a time jump. Maybe we look to Henry graduating from high school or college and everyone gets together to celebrate? Someone gets a big promotion and they make it into an occasion? A big no to getting together for a funeral....

comments

Thankfully, he reports that he and his children are safe.

He and some friends took a boat into the scene and swam in to check on the damage. Although he had just lost his home, he jumped into action to help save the homes of neighbors.

Ive linked an article that lists some of the ways that you can help, as well as Joe's Instagram account which have some pictures of the damage.

These fires are now the most destructive fires in California history, in terms of loss of life and property damage. The town of Paradise has been wiped off the map, completely destroyed.

Please help if you can. If you can't, please offer up a prayer for rain: it is the only hope they have at this time.

Update: Richard Dean Anderson is safe, house spared although many in his neighborhood were destroyed.
We've been discussing this in the rewatch but I thought it deserved its own thread. I read a crack Fanfic that made the case that Jack never deserved Daniel because there was one season five episode where he never even spoke to Daniel.

Here's what I've figured out.

The Fifth Man. The only conversation, if you can call it that, is Daniel snarking about being shot by the zat Jack gave Tyler.

48 Hours. Bupkis. Both in the same room but no actual words exchanged. Daniel spends most of his time schmoozing with the Russians. And at the end when Teal'c is rescued from the gate, Sam and Jack rush down to the gateroom but Daniel doesn't.

Summit. Jack makes a crack to Daniel about the Tok'ra at the beginning but it's crickets after that.

Last Stand. Another no. Granted, they spend most of this episode apart....wait, I'm starting to sense a trend here.

The Sentinel. Jack makes a remark about the length of the traitors prison time. And that's all. They do spend most of the episode separated, Jack goes to the city, Daniel goes to the cave.

Revelations. No interaction here, what with Daniel being dead and all.

The other episodes did have interaction, some minimal but at least there were words exchanged.

But breaking it down like this, you see that there was a lot of Daniel being separated from his team. You do the math.

comments

There's a lot of talk on twitter about convincing MGM to relaunch Stargate, in some form or another.

I'm definitely on the fence on this subject. I, frankly, don't want more stargate if it equals bad stargate. There is no way the Fab Four are ever getting back together. And I imagine that Michael, Amanda and Chris, while not actively running from their stargate past, have spent a lot of time trying to convince people (casting type people) that they can do other genres. We might get lucky enough to get them for an occasional cameo. And by that, I don't mean a recording of Daniel rehashing the history of the stargate program. While it was satisfying on the surface, it was like ordering a cheeseburger and discovering there was a multitude of cheese and no burger...

What I'm afraid will happen is that some folks will use that as a springboard to stroke their own egos, forward their own agendas and the heart of the stargate mythology will end up with a spear in an uncomfortable spot.

So, let's be realistic: what story is left to be told? Goa'uld? Kicked their ass. Replicators? Melted them down. Ori? Shined a little truth and left them in ashes.

So we're gonna have to create a new enemy? It'll have to be a big new baddie, more ruthless and terrifying than any we've ever seen. Because it can't be someone that's been around all this time and we've just never met them, right? How would that work?

And who would be our heroes du jour? There at least has to be something familiar, some hook to get us old fans interested. I freely admit I wouldn't mind seeing Walter dialing it up but I kind of come up blank after that. Ideally, it would have to be something that would drag the original SG-1 back together one last time, then to launch the new cast off.

Or do you do it Star Wars style? Bring back the originals only to...you know....spoiler alert...not have them around anymore? It would be great, dramatically, but who, realistically, wants to kill them off? Not I!

Or maybe you have someone say, "you know, it would be great but General Carter went down with Phoenix, Master Teal'c ran out of tretonin while trapped on PX-something and Dr. Jackson? Well, there's a grave at Arlington but who knows what's in it?"

I yearn, like most of us, for some GOOD stargate, Not just good enough stargate, not so-so stargate but good stargate. Stargate that makes me cry, that makes me think, that makes me look forward to the next episode. In other words, stargate that makes me happy to be a part of that world.

comments

I saw this and was fascinated by the concept so I checked it out.

I have 181 stories at AO3 for a total of 405,291 words and 92,253 hits. Stargate SG-1 (to no one's surprise) came in first, with 172 entries. There are 7 for Angel, 5 for NCIS, 2 for Criminal Minds. Star Wars, Downton Abbey, Saving Hope, Bones and Burn Notice have one entry apiece. Several are crossovers, that's why the numbers don't quite add up.

I hesitate to list them by hits because I feel like there is a discrepancy with the count.

1. I Like the Quiet - SG1. 19649 hits
2. To Catch a Falling Star - SG-1/NCIS. 3360 hits
3. To Save a Falling Star - SG-1/NCIS. 2811
4. Painted Soldiers - SG-1/NCIS. 2500 hits
5. Best Laid Plans - Sg-1/NCIS. 2350 hits

By Kudos:
1. Best Laid Plans. 100
2.
I don't know whether you're anticipating a white Christmas in your little corner of the world; where I live, it's going to be 65 and rainy. Christmas is pretty quiet for me. Being single does make you a little out of kilter in this family-oriented time of year. But one of my sisters lives very close (she can be from her door to mine in about 2 minutes) and she will come for Christmas dinner.

We made an overly large turkey for Thanksgiving and since we both have some in the freezer, we decided to go a little less traditional for dinner. We will bake a ham and have scalloped potatoes, steamed broccoli, rolls, and a strawberry pretzel salad for desert.

Whether you celebrate all of them, some of them, or none of them, have a joyous holiday season

comments
